CHAPTER FOURTEEN

THE SECOND ACT FINALE

Ellie wasn’t sure how she felt about Nina’s plan. It involved putting all of them in danger, but more than anybody, Kat. She felt awful about everything that was happening to Kat. Ellie was no stranger to being hated for reasons far beyond her control. She was a young black girl who had grown up in in a pretty poor area. She had spent her life hearing comments she wouldn’t wish on anybody. She remembered patiently explaining to one of her white friends why she always had to make sure to get a receipt when using a self-service check out in a store, because otherwise they’d see a black girl walking out with something they had no proof they had paid for. Her friend hadn’t understood. But somehow, what Kat was dealing with seemed worse. Or at least, it made Ellie feel guiltier for even bringing it up.

She couldn’t quite explain why, but she felt like by even acknowledging that something made Kat different from the other girls, she was siding with the transphobes. Poor Kat didn’t deserve that, Ellie knew. There was nothing different about her. She didn’t deserve that treatment. And yet, now, here she was, the cornerstone of their plan, purely because of who she was. It didn’t sit right with Ellie at all. Judging by the awkward expressions on the faces of the others, it didn’t sit well with them either.

They had left the refuge of the small room they had been hiding in and headed towards the stairs and the foyer. Nina was fairly confident that any attempt to leave would prompt a ghost retaliation, and that would be their best window of opportunity. Kat was hanging back, at the rear of the group. She was quiet, and while she hadn’t exactly been the most talkative of them all beforehand, it gnawed at Ellie’s sense of guilt that she was clearly shaken.

'Hey, uh, you alright?' Ellie asked gently, taking a step back to check up on her.

'Yeah, uh, just, we’re gonna go fight ghosts, and I might die, because I’m the only one who can stop them. Kinda nervous,' Kat answered with a slightly nervous look.

'I mean, uh, about… well, all of this,' Ellie waved a vague hand, trying to gesture at the entire situation they had found themselves in. Kat paused, and then shook her head.

'I…. don’t like people knowing,' she admitted.

'That you’re trans? Trust me, none of us care,' Ellie said sympathetically.

'Yeah, but I care. Being able to pass. It's what I've always wanted. Because… being seen as anything else, it feels like a lie. I’m not trans. Not in my head. I’m just a girl. I was always a girl. My body was wrong but that’s it. I don’t want to be trans. I don’t want to be the boy who became a girl. I just want to be a girl,' she explained, and Ellie thought she felt her own heart break. It wasn’t really something she had given enough thought to before, she realised.
